Job Description

Currently recruiting a MRI Technologist in San Antonio, Texas, to work at San Antonio Military Medical Center (BAMC) and associated clinics in the greater San Antonio area providing medical care for military members, retirees, and their families. The MRI Technologist is a full-time position, beetween the hours of:

Monday - Sunday:
6: 00 AM and 2: 30 PM
2: 00 PM and 10: 30 PM
Saturday:
6 AM and 2: 30 PM
2 PM and 10: 30 PM

Services are required on Federal holidays as needed.

All employees spend the first six to eight weeks on dayshift for training.

DUTIES OF THE MRI TECHNOLOGIST:
  • Independently performs complex computerized 2D and 3D MRI scanning, and establishes various parameters, flip angles, matrices, signal averages, Field Of Views (FOVs), Inversion Times (TIs), center frequencies, gradient echoes, saturation bands, graphic Rx, true resolutions, rectangular FOVs, phase and frequency encodings, volume fast scan (3D), fat or water suppressions, contrast uptake post processes, spectroscopies, stealth tumor localizations, cardiac and peripheral gatings, respiratory compensations, velocity encodings, and slice thicknesses/gappings, in order to produce optimum Signal to Noise Ratios (SNRs)to provide physicians with information required to complete a diagnosis.
  • Performs magnetic resonance imaging in clinical and inpatient settings, to include routine and specialized examinations of heads, spines, extremities, and bodies to include specialized cardiac imaging, adult and pediatric sedation examinations, whole body imaging, cardiac and brain perfusion, brain and whole-body spectroscopy, liver elastography, breast imaging and biopsy procedures.
  • Possesses knowledge of current imaging techniques and stays abreast of any new developments within the field of study.
  • Confers with Radiologists to establish imaging parameters best suited for demonstrating specific pathology requirements for non-standard examinations.
  • Identifies need for, and initiates action to, obtain higher-level support when necessary.
  • Receives and reviews request from physicians and other HCPs for patient MRI exams and assists in the triage of scheduling patients.
  • Determines the conditions, as well as the procedures and equipment necessary to best meet the needs of the individual case.
  • Receives patients, reviews patient questionnaires, explains methods of procedure, positions patients, and counsel patients regarding the risks/benefits of the procedures and produces images necessary for the examination requested.
  • Performs auto/manual pre-scanning techniques to properly calibrate radio frequencies according to patient s size and areas of interest.
  • Conducts examinations and adjusts technique and equipment to best present the medically significant aspects found.
  • Identifies artifacts, their causes, and how to alter and/or minimize their effects on final images.
  • If unanticipated conditions or anomalies are discovered, extends, and modifiesprocedures to ensure full and accurate information as to findings and patient s condition.
  • Observes and reports patient responses to instructions, movement, touch, etc., if significant and if necessary, renders emergency aid and/or summons assistance.
  • Produces hard copy images by applying the correct width/levels (contrast and brightness) via a laser camera.
  • Assists Radiologists and physicians in reading or evaluating results.
  • Notifies Radiologists and physicians of the results of examinations to provide preliminary diagnostic evaluations and identifies any significant findings that may require immediate attention and/or visualization.
  • Administers emergency medicinal injections under the clinical direction of the physician in charge.
  • Establishes and maintains a variety of files and records relating to MRI activities and
  • functions.
  • Prepares reports on examinations, equipment status and utilization, workload, supply status and consumption, and other related matters.
  • Selects, sets-up, adjusts and operates the MRI equipment.
  • Oversees the use of various emergency equipment such as cardiac defibrillators, oxygen, and suction.
  • Performs operator-level maintenance and care of equipment.
  • Monitors and reports cryogen levels, loss, and usage.
  • Provides training to military personnel/students in MRI principles, procedures, techniques, scanner capabilities, as well as hands-on training for Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) purposes.
  • Assists in the development of MRI training plans for incorporation in other programs of instruction.


  • QUALIFICATIONS OF THE MRI TECHNOLOGIST:Graduated from an accredited program or military equivalent program in order to meet the education requirements established for the certification(s) listed below.
  • BLS
  • Maintain a current American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) certification as MRI Technologist.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience within the last five 5) years providing services as a certified MRI Technologist.
  • Maintain a current Medical Radiological Technologist license. (May be aquired after start date with proof of current application)
  • Must be an US citizen for access to government computers.
