Position Scope/Decision-Making Authority:

This position provides oversight and coordination for the Southwest Division's Drilling and Blasting Program. Provides technical guidance, coordination, and assistance to Operations Management and drilling/blasting personnel in establishing and maintaining a safe, efficient, and community sensitive blasting program in accordance with both Vulcan and regulatory standards. Provides technical interface with vendors regarding blasting and drilling parameters, designs, and products. Interfaces with government and regulatory officials as well as community members regarding compliance and related matters. Partners with and provides strong support to key internal customers to improve operational efficiencies, KPI performance, and process training. Collaborates with operations leadership to support the design and establishment of best practices to enhance operations performance.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develops a strategy to identify and implement process improvement across the SWD.
  • Goal Setting and Action Planning- Participate in setting production targets (production and cost) for each plant segment. Work with local management to assist them in seeing what is possible from a processing standpoint and how these changes will impact the bottom line and help to develop long-term action plans.
  • Full Plant Process Reviews- Prioritize, coordinate, and participate in plant process and improvement reviews.
  • Monthly Plant Visits- Work with plant managers and area managers on process improvement optimization and develop short-term improvement actions, follow up on projects, etc.
  • Process Design- Effectively engage with other support functions (Engineering, Operations Support, Mining, Geology, etc.) to ensure an overall coordinated approach to projects.
  • Process Improvement and Innovation- Act as the clearinghouse for innovation (new technology) and historical information (utilizing systems-based capabilities) to make high-quality, informed decisions using actual performance and cost data.
  • Key Performance Metrics- Define key metrics and ensure standardization in terms of metrics and data collection to drive consistency in the utilization of EMS, PMS, and best practices with a focus on efficiencies and cost improvement. Drive a clear, transparent view of operational success.
  • Training- Ensure area managers, plant managers, plant supervisors, and other production employees understand the tools and resources available to help them manage their business, including knowledge of systems capabilities for pulling historical information. Assists with identifying training materials and training for process optimization
  • Relationship Management/Resources and Key Customers - accountable to general managers, area managers, and plant managers to define their assigned operations, to develop, reach collective agreement on, share, and drive implementation of agreed-upon best practices.

Education, Experience, Skills Required:

Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience is required.

Experience: Ten years of engineering experience in a heavy industrial, civil/mechanical engineering, or mining environment. Must have a thorough knowledge of mine drilling and blasting standards and regulations, production techniques and equipment, and safety and environmental regulations (ATF/MSHA/OSHA). Must be familiar with explosive service and product suppliers. Must have strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Must be self-sufficient and self-directed and able to work with only general supervision and direction.

Expectations: Must independently plan and prioritize effectively in a demanding, stressful, and geographically diverse environment. Must work effectively with and through Area Operations Managers, Plant Managers, and Plant Supervisors to achieve the core objectives of safe, efficient, cost-effective, and community-sensitive blasting. Credibility, responsiveness, and a strong desire to constantly improve blasting activity and results are required. The ability to utilize spreadsheets and other appropriate computer systems applications is required. Must be able and willing to travel significantly and frequently throughout the Division as necessary and on occasional short notice when circumstances require.

Overnight travel is 50%. Must professionally represent VMC to all customers, vendors, neighbors, and internal personnel.

Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Completion of process reviews.
    • Performance against KPI metrics and cost targets for the assigned area.
    • Performance against operations goals and action plans for the designated area and their impact on the bottom line.
    • Operations compliance with company policy and practices as well as federal, state, and local ordinances.
    • Effective training and development of operations personnel in materials processing to sustain operational improvements.
    • Acts as liaison between the Company and outside shot and explosive services/products suppliers. Provides oversight, technical guidance, coordination, and assistance as required.Involved in dealing with blasting complaints. Leads investigation teams involving blasting related incidents and is responsible for the development and the implementation of recommendations to prevent issues and/or recurrences.
    • Acts as the Division's representative for the development and practical implementation of the Company's drilling and blasting standards.Assists Operations, third-party seismic consultants, and Safety & Health Department Representatives in the resolution of all blasting-related complaints.Maintains competencies in the most current blasting and drilling technologies, techniques, and regulatory compliance developments. Recommends techniques, products, and procedures for improvements.
    • Develops and conducts necessary drilling and blasting training for operations personnel, blasters, and drillers (internal and external).
    • Must be able to develop and assess shot designs for safe, efficient, and productive blasting results.
    • Responsible for ensuring that the Region complies with all ATF, MSHA, State, and Local Agency requirements related to explosives storage and handling.
    • Represents the Division in public meetings as the in-house expert for Vulcan's drilling and blasting program. Must be able to effectively communicate technical information in terms that are clear to the general public.
