Job Description

Senior CNC Operator

Key Duties/Programming Responsibilities:

With the support of our Sr. CNC Programmer, this position is responsible for CNC machining of high-value aerospace composite parts and assemblies. This position will support new product implementation, plant-wide Lean efforts, using real-time creativity and frugality to remove waste and improve CNC programs, tools, and equipment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Load and set-up composite parts and assemblies onto various 5-axis CNC machines in accordance with the specified requirements. Maintain production at or above the standard rates.
  • Monitor machine operating parameters, adjust and fine tune equipment as required either individually or with the assistance of shop supervision. Track and review tool wear, assist in changing or replacing as directed.
  • Accurately measure, inspect, and record physical measurements using coordinate measuring machines (CMM's), dial gauges, indicators, thread gauges, and other tools as needed. Log results accurately and neatly.
  • Perform post machining finishing activities (deburring, chamfering, etc.) as appropriate for the job at hand.
  • Regularly use ERP system (SAP-Fiori) and data travelers to accurately input job data.
  • Recover mills after repairs to the machine
  • Lead/coordinate the training activities of all machine operators
  • Assist CNC programmer and engineers with CNC tool designs and participate in manufacturing process improvements
  • Have an understanding and capability to interpret / correlate issues with part in reference to the machine
  • Perform special projects as required.

Position Competencies

Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of CNC machines, operations, and languages
  • G-Code knowledge
  • Trouble Shooting problems as they arise throughout the day. Ex. Dialing in head straightness, broken tools, fixture issues, etc.
  • Understand operations and setup of manual lathes and mills
  • Working knowledge of Lean manufacturing, TPM, and visual factory with a focus on waste reduction
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings, with a solid understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T per ASME Y14.5M)
  • Extensive knowledge and application of precision measuring instruments and the application of such instruments. Instruments should include but not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, indicators and scales.
  • Extensive knowledge of tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts and other accessories used on various machines.
