Full-time: Main Campus/Remote/Hybrid, Mon-Fri

We are looking for a candidate who can work closely with faculty and staff to design and build efficient instrument-to-interpretation pipelines for next-generation sequencing (NGS) workflows, optimizing outcomes for our genomic medicine initiatives. It is expected that the individual in this position will possess strong software development abilities, enjoys solving complex problems and has a desire to make an impact in medical research and patient care. The candidate will also be encouraged to participate in bioinformatics related discussions, group meetings and presentations for the Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM).

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

    Collaborate effectively with research and clinical faculty and staff to design and develop algorithms and software for analyzing genomic data sets.
  • Use computational genomics and bioinformatics skills and competencies to:
    • Implement standard bioinformatics tools to perform next generation sequencing (NGS) downstream analysis and visualization.
    • Develop and deploy robust data processing and analysis pipelines for a variety of NGS protocols and related methods.
    • Employ best practices in coding, including thorough testing and documentation of code.
    • Develop methods to automate processing and analysis of large data sets.
    • Identify and benchmark community-developed bioinformatics tools and develop new algorithms as needed for use in analysis pipelines.
    • Maintains awareness of current literature and bioinformatics tools in relevant areas.
    • Research, develop and evaluate novel computational approaches for NGS analysis.
    • Manage the release and deployment of pipelines in a shared cloud computing infrastructure.
  • Support a wide variety of research via data analysis, statistical analysis, and experimental design.
  • Lead development of advanced analysis solutions, gathering requirements from the investigator and possessing a good understanding of the biology underlying the given task.

Qualifications


Education and Experience

  • Bachelors or Master's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics or related discipline.
  • Minimum two years software development experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency with modern NGS tools and analysis of NGS data
  • Experience in a Linux/Unix environment, including proficiency in shell scripting
  • Proven success in the design, development, and deployment of data analysis pipelines
  • Deep computational understanding and strong programming skills
  • Experience with Docker and Amazon Web Services
  • Demonstrated use of best practices in software development, including version control, unit and integration testing, documentation, and deployment
  • Familiarity a range of statistical tests and experimental design techniques
  • Collaborative problem-solving, eager to learn and adapt in a dynamic environment
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment
  • Exceptional teamwork and communication skills with meticulous attention to detail.

Minimum Physical Requirements:

Must be able to remain in stationary position for extended periods of time. Must be able to repeatedly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Must be able to occasionally move about inside the workspace to access objects necessary for the job (file cabinets, printers, etc.). Must be able to accurately communicate information and ideas in person and through telecommunications.
